Welcome to Rote
Deserted white sand, palm fringed beaches, uninhabited small islands, wonderful coral reefs, tropical grasslands, small lakes, rice terraces and mangroves – Rote is truly paradise on earth. Frequently likened to the Maldives, Tahiti and Bali 20 years ago, Rote was a well guarded secret but the word is quietly getting out for those in the know.
It is a quick 75minute flight from Bali to Kupang in Timor. From there, Wings Air operates daily flights between Rote and Kupang. Flight time is about 20 minutes. You can now leave Bali in the late morning and arrive in time to have a sunset swim or surf in Rote.
The Indonesian island of Rote is part of the East Nusa Tenggara province of the Lesser Sunda Islands. Rote lies just 500km North West off the Australian coast and is Indonesia’s most southern island. Its remoteness has helped to preserve a lot of the unique culture. Ikat for example, the traditional weaving technique, has been handed down from generation to generation.
Rotenese locals are very friendly, happy and welcoming. They are mainly of Christian faith and being part of the church community plays a big part in their lives.
The island itself is also very safe, giving you the benefit of sleeping freely without any worries. Rote is a very peaceful and family friendly island.
The local economy in Rote is characterized mostly by lontar plantations and seaweed farming for cosmetic purposes. Fishing and animal rearing are also a source of income, hence the frequent sight of horses, pigs, goats and cows roaming the island freely.
All in all, Rote Island offers an exciting and unique tropical getaway, which unlike many other destinations across Indonesia, is still remote and unexplored. So come and feel the magic for yourself. Rote is truly a small paradise on earth waiting to be discovered and enjoyed by the whole family. The best way to do this, is by staying at Villa Tasi.
